Service Description

Colorado SB25-003 Basic Firearms Safety Course — 4 Hours This 4-hour, in-person Basic Firearms Safety Course is designed to meet Colorado’s training requirements under SB25-003 for eligible individuals seeking to purchase or receive a transfer of a specified semiautomatic firearm (SSF) on or after August 1, 2026. This course is intended for students who have qualifying, verified Hunter Education credentials and have completed the required eligibility process before attending. Colorado’s program requires the Basic course to include at least four hours of in-person instruction. Course Topics Students will receive instruction covering required firearm-safety subjects, including: * Safe handling of semiautomatic firearms and ammunition magazines * Safe firearm storage and methods to prevent unauthorized access * Child firearm safety * Firearm-related deaths and mental-health awareness * Colorado Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO) * Victim awareness and the consequences associated with firearm misuse * Responsible firearm ownership and applicable safety practices * Requirements and responsibilities associated with Colorado’s SB25-003 program Course Completion Students must successfully complete the required course examination with a minimum score of 90%. Upon successful completion, the instructor records the student’s course completion in the state system. Important Prerequisites Before attending the 4-hour course, students must have: * A valid Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card/approved eligibility status * Qualifying Hunter Education credentials that can be verified through the state system * Government-issued photo identification Hunter Education alone does not satisfy the SB25-003 training requirement. Eligible students must also successfully complete the 4-hour Basic Firearms Safety Course. Individuals without qualifying Hunter Education generally must complete the 12-hour Extended Firearms Safety Course instead. Duration: 4 Hours Format: In-Person Passing Score: 90% or higher Purpose: Colorado SB25-003 Basic Firearms Safety Course for qualifying specified semiautomatic firearm purchases/transfers
